Socotra
Socotra lying at the East of Aden is one
of the largest Yemeni islands, whose length is 135km the
island possesses a lot of uniqueness in its environment
as it Astonishes the visitor with its diversity as it
combines all the features of relief and natural life.
The Distribution of Population
A) Cave dwellers in the Mountainous Region where they
work as shepherds in high mountains intersected with
many valleys and coated with various trees and fauna.
The high mountains are located in the chain of Qolhal
and the highest summit in Mommi. At its Eastern
extremity there groups the “ tow Brothers Blood Tree”
which the Island people call A’arjeeb. The common known
for the said tree.
B) The coastal population who live in modest houses,
whose roofs are of tree trunks and the dried
C) Palm tree leaves and their windows are very small
openings from which the air can enter during summer and
if the winter is cool the windows are closed by stones
and work in the fishing activity.
D) The population of Inner Valleys, usually their houses
are built of stones and they are working in shepherding
and growing palm trees and at the time of dates harvest
they exercise rites and habits interspersed with dances
revealing their happiness for the crops which forms the
main dish of the population during the invasion of some
parts of the island by sharp winds persisting till the
end of the winds season. There are the flowing water
springs like Danjhar spring and natural fountains in
Hajhar whose waters are perennial.
